The Leakey Collection

Objective

The Leakey Collection, a Fair Trade Company, was born out of need due to the devastating drought in Kenya around 2001. The men had left the women and children behind, as they had to take the surviving cattle far up country in search of grazing land. As a result, the Leakey's found themselves supporting as many as 100 Maasai families by giving them money for food, school fees, medical expenses and housing. This was not sustainable for either party and the Leakey's knew they had to find another way.
Philip, known for his vision of natural materials, came up with the idea to create jewelry made from grass. It was Katy Leakey's artistic background that influenced the modification of the single strand on elastic, as a design your own jewelry system to appeal to a broader based market in the West.

Strategy / Tactics

Build brand loyalty by presenting themselves as a LIFESTYLE company that provides products with a contemporary design for the Western World, bridging two worlds using commerce as the vehicle.
Position the Leakey's as experts using their knowledge about Fair Trade practices that include building a company around the lifestyle and culture of the Maasai instead of disrupting their way of life and educating people of all nations on Fair Trade and how it is the future of fighting poverty conditions.
