Dick,
I'm curious: you mentioned you were only just getting to know your Dad when he passed. A great and strong character like yours had to have influences from somewhere. If not from your Dad, then where? I'd always imagined you to have followed in your Dad's footsteps, as many do. What did your Dad do for a living?
P.S.- have always enjoyed your blogs:)

Thanks for your post. I've been researching PFP and like what you've had to say. Naturally the traditional PR agency types will feel threatened. I like the PFP approach- just need to find the right partner.

I'm glad you're so egalitarian, but that attitude falls on its face when the same person who claims to possess it also says nobody can discuss the topic without first using the correct terminology.

Surely a rose by any other name can smell as sweet?

Adam, I care little about the "cant of the profession" or jargon (which I dislike in any profession) but even an amateur level discussion as you call it, cannot dispense wisdom coming from an illogical base of termonology and therefore is without merit. The "unwashed masses"that you refer to, deserve intelligent discourse as much as those in your "high towers."

I think the fundamental problem is that you expect the author to discourse in the cant of the profession, whereas given the context of the piece and the style of the author, it seems obvious that this was not meant to be a high-level commentary on the nature of PR, but rather the transmission of worldly experience gained to others with little to no PR/advertising expertise.

The piece is found on a social marketing site. Thus I think the author wrote wisely by eschewing the traditional jargon in order to reach the wider, non-expert audience that they were inevitably going to reach.

Given that intent and context, I should hope you have it in you to allow this sort of amateur-level discussion to continue, as it cannot hurt to come down from our high towers every now and then to dispense a little wisdom to the unwashed masses.

Adam, "Learned advice"? The first thing this author should learn is the correct use of the terminology before he pretends to offer advice or solicit a response to a survey on the subject. The discussion topic itself...advertising vs. public relations...is a valid and important one for sure. But it deserves to be presented by an author that has a basic knowledge of the subject matter.

After reading the original material you take offense to, I have to say I think you missed the point of the article.

That little write-up was mostly about giving the learned advice of the author about strategies for pursuing effective PR and/or advertising.

Sure, the first paragraph was a little misleading if read quickly, but seems that if you'd paid closer attention to the rest of the article after you let your hackles get prematurely agitated, you'd have seen that it has little to do with the issues you accuse it of...
